Karkwa – Les chemins de verre (Review and Polaris Chances)

Here is part six of a ten part on reviewing the 2010 Polaris Music Prize shortlist nominees.
This time I am going to review Karkwa’s “Les chemins de verre”.
Translation in English means “The Paths of Glass”. (If I am correct?)

For those that don’t know, Karkwa actually means carquois (French for a quiver of arrows).
Being compared to Malajube is an understatement.
Both acts are totally different.
The album was released on March 30, 2010.
The first time I heard of Karkwa was their song Oublie Pas (aka Forget).
They are one of those French bands that makes you want to sing and speak in French.
When I listen to the title track “Les Chemins de Verre”, it feels like a Wintersleep track sung in French.
They could possibly be the French Wintersleep.
Something about Karkwa’s music I totally enjoy.
Sometimes it can be dreamy and melodic and other times you can just rock out without getting too loud.
It is not just a indie French rock album, they do some interesting songs like Marie tu pleures which feels like campfire singalong and Dors dans mon sang which is a ballady sad song.
While La piqûre sounds like a Coldplay track.
I know this album is sung entirely in French.
But you should give them a chance despite the language barrier.
It is one fine amazing album.
On Polaris: There is a 80% chance they might win it.
They might not win it. Depending on who the grand juries are.
Its a tough album to listen to if you don’t speak or understand the language.
If they win they would be the first non English act to win the Prize.
Artistic merits the album is a fine album and its emotions are everywhere.
Also a great indie rock album that happens to be in French.
