"Call us biased, but we're going to have to throw our support behind Les chemins de verre by Montreal's Karkwa. On a different day, we might have pushed Belmundo Regal, Radio Radio's quirky franglais mash up, but it's Karkwa's tempestuous indie rock that we just can't keep stuffing our ears with. At first they come off as a French version of early Radiohead (not a bad place to start), but spend some more time with the album and you'll notice subtle prog-rock sounds, tender melodies and sweeping rock riffs. Karkwa display an impressive attention to dynamics. They mix ominous rockers like the lead-off track 'Le pyromane' with jubilant ballads like 'Marie tu pleures' (trust me, you'll sing along even if you don't know any French). They're one of Quebec's best-kept secrets, though with a Polaris short-list nod, hopefully that will change."
