Though this review comes later than it probably should have, it remains relevant because Said the Whale is a local band that tends to play in Vancouver a great deal of times each year. I suppose the only difference with this show is that it was performed under the banner of the Cultural Olympiad, and they had an extremely entertaining band playing before them, which basically overshadowed their performance in front of the hometown crowd. Granted I’ve seen Said the Whale before and while I enjoy their shows, they haven’t really evolved much in the three times I’ve seen them. This night, they played in front of a significantly larger crowd than who usually shows up at Media Club (where I’ve seen them play before) and quite frankly, Karkwa set a precedent that Said the Whale was unable to match. Given my obvious prejudice towards writing favourable things about Said the Whale, I brought an uninitiated friend to the show to offer me a completely unbiased opinion of both bands, and like me Karkwa seemed to have stolen the show. Matching their on stage presence with the fluctuating energy of a varied set list, taking the crowd from guitar heavy rock riffs to calmer psychadelia, Karkwa seemed as if they could’ve played for hours after they left which is something that happen often enough.
