FMEAT in Exclaim !

The festival takes place in Rouyn-Noranda, QC, about a seven-hour drive north of Montreal, and lasts through the Labour Day weekend (September 2 to 5). The unlikely headliners are sludge rock gods the Melvins, and the roster includes Howe Gelb, Martha Wainwright, Polaris short-listers Karkwa and the Besnard Lakes, as well as a host of electronic, hip-hop and experimental pop acts.

“I started this festival in a selfish way,” FMEAT organizer Sandy Boutin tells Exclaim! “Born and raised in the area, I often had to drive down to Montreal to catch the shows I wanted to see. I felt like the music presented here did not always meet my musical taste.”(...)

 Nouvelle saison au Pont Rouge de Monthey

Le 15 octobre sera pour le public l’occasion de découvrir Karkwa (Can), groupe déjà culte au Québec, le plus souvent comparé à un équivalent francophone de Radiohead. C’est auréolé du succès de son dernier album « Les chemins de verre » que les cinq Montréalais débarquent sur le vieux continent, prêts à nous montrer pourquoi la vieille province est déjà à leurs pieds.

Five must-see acts at this year’s POP Montreal music festival

Eight years after its inception, the POP Montreal music festival returns to Montreal this September with talent, both new and familiar, that promises to rock the city for its five day run.

POP has showcased some of the world’s most talented recording artists and has plucked many others from obscurity, including the Arcade Fire, Metric, and the Kings of Leon. Now in its ninth year, the festival has yet again produced a stellar line up of up-and-coming artists. Karkwa

This local Francophone favourite recently released their fourth album which evokes well-deserved comparisons to the likes of Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens. Don’t let the French vocals deter you Anglophones. Karkwa effectively breaks down language barriers with their powerful melodies. Their distinct folk-meets-ambient sound is a killer combo that is sure to be a great show at this year’s festival.

Karkwa – Les Chemins de Verre (Audiogram)

Will the Polaris jury finally recognize the efforts of a French-Canadian artist? Drawing the short straw among the writers, I assumed I was going to be writing the token blurb for the token Québecois band on the short list. But somewhere along my journey down Les Chemins de Verre I was forced to cast off some of my prejudices, many of which were unfairly formed by previous lackluster Polaris nominee, Malajube. The first track to grab me, ‘Marie, Tu Pleurs’ seems to have found a happy medium between the loose-strumming energy of Blitzen Trapper’s ‘Furr’ and the spacious melancholy of Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’. 

Les Chemins manages to weave through the indie-folk trappings without getting trapped. The variety and texture of percussion found throughout the album is reminiscent of fellow Montréaler Patrick Watson, who actually guests on the group’s previous effort Le Volume du Vent. French language aside, lead guitarist and vocalist Louis-Jean Cormier is a dead ringer for Watson when the softer, higher notes are what he’s going for, but on Les Chemins it’s never long before another twist or turn.
